Great cars - all three runs! Review by railhead

I have a total of 21 Exact Rail Southern Waffle-side boxes. I have all 12 of the 2nd run and several each from the 1st run and this 3rd run. They're all very well done. I've been waiting a long time for someone to produce these in a Ready To Run version. I used to paint and decal my own box cars for Southern, but these cars really put my custom cars to shame. I've never done a waffle-side, because no one made a proper Southern car, except for Wright Track, and I just could never justify the cost of their kits. I always said if someone would make a Southern waffle box, in the 25-35 dollar range that I'd get a few atleast.

My only gripe with any of the 3 runs that ER has done is they haven't skipped around on the numbers as much as I'd like. In fact, there are several consecutive numbers. This isn't a gripe with just ER, as a lot of the other model RR manufacturers do the same thing. When you have a model that a particular railroad had 500+ cars, why not skip around a bit more. Someone else already said they'd like to see some in the530000+ range. Southern had some in the 527000+, 531000 and 532000+ ranges as well that wouldn't require much if any modification.

Why not make runs that are numbered for a couple cars out of each series when a 12 pack is issued. when the run is reissued, the same thing can be done again, and this will give modelers a really wide variety of numbers for their trains and layouts. But at the very least, stick to your current practice of going to a new number range each time you make a new run. Just avoid numbers close to each other, but it isn't very often you see numbers consecutive or even close on real trains.

BTW, I was not particularly bothered by the initial run that had the "incorrect" ends. It was still pretty close to being correct, and the rest of the car looked great. I only have 5 from that run, because I heard about the 2nd run when the 1st run came out, so I held off (Posted on 9/11/13)

I was glad when Exactrail released these cars. As a Southern modeler I appreciate Excatrail doing these cars. They were (and still can be seen) running all over North America. Outstanding model. I think this is the best plastic HO scale box car on the market.

Hope Exactrail does another run of these cars. I would like to see them do the cars from the 530000 - 530299 series. These cars had some variation in the side and door lettering.

Really would love to see Exactrail do the Southern 50' 6" double door waffle side box car! (Posted on 5/27/13)

I have always liked the proto-type cars. I was very happy when Exactrail came out with these cars as I am a Southern modeler. I have six of these cars. Very nice details and excellent paint and lettering.

Hope Exactrail does another run of these cars in new road numbers. (Posted on 1/30/13)
Exquisite! Review by Mike

I have wanted one of these Southern cars ever since I first saw one at a local industry I rode my bike to that was 2 towns away, some 30 years ago. I could never seem to catch the train, but these cars were always there on the siding. They were so unique once I got a close look at them.

The ExactRail model is superb. It captures all the detail and has such a great paint job. It is operationally flawless and really catches your eye running on the railroad. I did a little light weathering on mine to represent 1980. I don't recall seeing them too dirty back then. There are still some I spot today, some in newer NS paint, but still a few rusted ones in original Southern, so they are appropriate from late 70s until today. If you model in that time period you have to get one of these cars, they are exquisite models.
