The Bethlehem 3737/3716 Hopper is an Iconic Railcar of the Last Quarter Century

ExactRail is pleased to announce the second release of the Bethlehem 3737/3716 Hoppers in 4 all new paint schemes and undecorated kits!

With over 10,000 units produced, this is one of the most prolific, Western steel hoppers of last 40 years. The first Bethlehem 3737/3716 delivery went to the Chicago & Eastern Illinois in 1973, and subsequent orders went to the Texas & Pacific, Missouri Pacific and Chicago & North Western. These are still in service as of 2014, and many have been rebuilt into 4000 capacity cars—which, ExactRail also offers!

Missouri Pacific (MP) 1977 “As Delivered” paint scheme:

This paint scheme represents the #588710-589709 series. Delivered in MP’s attractive “Buzzsaw” paint scheme, this car differs from all previous versions offered to date.

Missouri Pacific (MP) 1979 “As Delivered” paint scheme—May delivery:

This is the first time the Screaming Eagle paint scheme has been offered on the 3737/3716 car. However, we have taken this paint scheme a step further in that it is being offered in two variations. One for the cars delivered in May of 1979, and a second for cars delivered in June 1979. That’s right! We are offering different versions of paint schemes just to take into account the build date. That just happened!

Missouri Pacific (MP) 1979 “As Delivered” paint scheme—June delivery:

This is the first time that the Screaming Eagle paint scheme on the 3737/3716 car. However, we have taken this paint scheme a step further in that it is being offered in two variations. One for the cars delivered in May of 1979, and a second for cars delivered in June 1979. That’s right! We are offering different versions of paint schemes just to account into account the build date. That just happened!

Missouri Pacific #588663:

After the C&EI and TP railroads were merged into the Missouri Pacific in 1976, the unique C&EI-style “buzzsaw” on some cars was repainted to reflect new ownership. In these cases, the ‘C&EI’ in the buzzsaw itself was replaced with various styles of stenciled ‘MP’ characters. ExactRail recreates this common “post delivery” variation with the road number specific paint scheme #588663. This car bears Seaboard Railway 1986 service dates and was photographed in this condition today. We have appropriately matched the unique numeral lettering styles of the second delivery of C&EI cars and data fonts. This is car is great as a mid-train variation that is highly prototypic.

Bethlehem 3483 Hopper

The second release of Bethlehem 3483 Hoppers consists of all-new paint schemes for the East and West coast and undecorated kits!

CSX acquired Bethlehem 3483 hoppers from the Union Pacific. These cars bore various Rio Grande schemes and CSXT reporting marks. There are different variations to how CSX stenciled the reporting marks on these cars. Our models accurately represent three common versions, plus we offer a road number specific paint scheme! This paint scheme, in combination with the other CSX paint scheme versions, will allow your CSX coal train to have the variations of the prototype

We are proud to introduce four all-new paint schemes in Rio Grande. These include the D&RGW 1972 “As Delivered, D&RGW 1982 “As Delivered” and two road number specific paint schemes, Southern Pacific Speed Lettering #12663 and D&RGW Medallion repaint #12788.

The Bethlehem 3483 Hopper is held by many to be the quintessential Western coal hopper of the modern era. In volume 4 number 3 of the Prospector, The Rio Grande Historical Society published “if one had to pick THE [sic] signature freight car of the Rio Grande in its final quarter century, it would undoubtedly be the 100 ton quad hopper from Bethlehem Steel Car.”

These cars went everywhere!

Rio Grande 1972 “As Delivered” paint scheme:

This paint scheme represents the 16375-16774 equipment series of Bethlehem 3483 hoppers. This paint scheme has unique mechanical data scripts on the car side, and it was delivered with single consolidation lube stencils and an ACI label. This is the earliest Rio Grande paint scheme that we have offered to date on the Bethlehem 3483!

Rio Grande 1982 “As Delivered” paint scheme:

This car represents the final lot (12500-12750) of Rio Grande Bethlehem 3483s. The paint scheme on this car is unique in that the railroad adopted a new lettering style for the capacity data block. This car also bears Bethlehem-Johnstown builder’s logo. Finally the dimensional and mechanical data is arranged in different locations than any of our previous releases. If you see Rio Grande painted Bethlehem 3483s on the rails today, they are likely to be from this equipment series!

D&RGW Medallion repaint #12788:

This paint scheme is a road number specific replica of Union Pacific’s car #12788. Union Pacific repainted a small number of D&RGW Bethlehem 3483 hoppers into a paint scheme that we refer to as “Medallion repaints.” This car is still in service today in this paint scheme, and it has been meticulously recreated to be a genuine replica!

D&RGW Speed Lettering SP Repaint #12663:

The Southern Pacific repainted a small number of D&RGW Bethlehem 3483 hopper into paint schemes with ‘Southern Pacific’ in speed lettering. This car is a precise match to D&RGW #12663. This includes the manner in which the T and H in ‘Southern’ and the C and I in ‘Pacific’ wrap over the ribs of the car.

CSX “3-panel” ex-D&RGW repaints:

From among the paint scheme variations of the CSX fleet, it is common to have the car number across three panels. The CSX “3-panel” ex-D&RGW paint scheme replicates this version with full Rio Grande lettering.

CSX “2-panel” ex-D&RGW repaints:

From among the paint scheme variations of the CSX fleet, it is common to have the car number across two panels. The CSX “2-panel” ex-D&RGW paint scheme replicates this version with full Rio Grande lettering.

CSX “3-panel” post SP repaints:

From among the paint scheme variations of the CSX fleet, it is common to have the car number across three panels. The CSX “3-panel” post SP repaint paint scheme replicates the version of CSX repaints with ‘Rio Grande’ patched out.

CSX Medallion Repaint #834055:

Of the ex-Union Pacific Bethlehem 3483 hoppers, some of these were repainted in Union Pacific medallion paint schemes before being acquired by CSX. CSX #834055 is a road number specific paint scheme of this variation.

The Southern “Big John” Covered Hopper took on the Supreme Court and changed the industry!

In the late 1950s, the Southern Railway believed that new methods would allow for a reduction in shipping rates for grain and feed traffic. The Southern proposed a strategy to create large, lightweight, 100-ton covered hoppers. At this time, railroads shipped grains in 50-ton boxcars. The Southern projected that this strategy would allow for a 60% rate reduction under boxcars.

However, the concept was met with resistance, and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) appealed with the ICC, who had approved of the Southern’s proposed rates. The TVA operated Alabama and Tennessee lock, damns and water transportation. They viewed the reduced rates as a threat to barge traffic. In the litigation that followed, the Supreme Court heard two cases, and Congress was encouraged to review rate regulation.

In addition to car rates, avoiding interchange fees was a strategic component of the Southern’s competitive strategy. As such, the Southern was strict about service routes. In the early years of Big John service, the cars remained on Southern system so to avoid interchange charges. Big Johns were primarily operated to gateway points in the Midwest. There, mid-western railroads and river barges would offload lading into elevators, and then, the Southern Railway would reload the same lading into Big Johns—all to keep cars on home rails. Additionally, there were virtually no single car movements—common for grain traffic in the early 1960s. Instead, the Southern moved these cars in large blocks—a notion well in advance of the unit train concept.

ExactRail’s Magor 4948 “Big John” Covered Hopper has been developed in close association with the Southern Railway Historical Society. They Southern Railway Historical Society gave the ExactRail’s Magor 4948 “Big John” Covered Hopper the absolute highest praise! Thank you to the Southern Railway Historical Society for their help with this project!

GSC 53’-6” Flat Car

If you model through the 1980s, one of the most underrepresented models is the general service flat car. The landscape of contemporary railroading is different today, but general service flat cars were once quite common. And of these, the General Steel Castings (GSC) 53’-6” flatcar is one of the most interesting. ExactRail has filled the gap by creating two of the finest flat car models ever.

ExactRail is offering two entirely unique 53’-6 flat cars! We are proud to introduce the GSC 53’-6” Flat Car with 43’-3” Truck Centers and GSC 53’-6 Flat Car with 42’-0 Truck Centers! Although both flat cars were built by GSC, the difference between these cars is far greater than just the truck spacing. They are completely unique prototypes in every sense! And, we have captured the differences between these cars accurately.

The car body of GSC flat is cast, which means the entire car body is a single piece of solid steel. The result is that these cars are veritable battleships on rails, and many are in active MoW service today—over 60 years later!

ExactRail’s GSC flat cars have full underbody detail and laser etched wood decks. We have accurately captured the unique curves and casting marks of the cast design, which makes these cars so elegant. Our wood decks are laser-etched in laserboard. These cars also feature accurate 10” Freightmaster End-of-Car cushioning units.

GSC 42' Flat Car

Introduced with a live drum roll at the 2014 Union Pacific Historical Society Convention!

In 1951, General Steel Castings (GSC) provided 42' flat car bodies to the Union Pacific. The Union Pacific assembled these cars in Denver, CO and designated them by the car class F-50-15. The GSC 42’ flat car was purchased to serve the railroad as a general service flat, which means that these cars moved all types of freight. Some were re-classified into more specialized service, including TOFC, wheel service, traction motors, and we have been told that some carried aircraft components.

The car body of GSC flat is cast, which means the entire car body is a single piece of solid steel. The result is that these cars are veritable battleships on rails, and many are in active MoW service today—63 years later!

ExactRail’s GSC flat cars have full underbody detail and laser etched wood decks. We have accurately captures the unique curves of the cast design, which makes these cars so elegant.

The model will be available in 5 paint schemes.

1951 'As Delivered' Union Pacific Paint Scheme:

Available in twelve road numbers, the 1951 ‘As Delivered’ paint scheme is the paint scheme that many cars wore into retirement in the 80s and 90s. Both artwork are colors are exceptionally accurate, and the model is complete with U.P.R.R. Denver built stencils.

1974 Union Pacific Repaint:

The 1974 repaint is the common repaint scheme that the Union Pacific employed on many of its F-50-15s. In this scheme, ‘Union Pacific’ lettering was rendered in white, and the car body a darker shade of brown. ExactRail has includes etched ACI labels, double COTS blocks and roller bearing trucks to make this model perfect for your post-1974 era trains.

Union Pacific #913123 MoW Paint Scheme:

In August of 1980, Union Pacific repainted F-50-15 #913123 into the Kenefick Green Maintenance-of-Way scheme. The lettering styles on the prototype are eclectic, and they are recreated with extraordinary accuracy on our model—including the miniature skull and bones stencil near the COTS block. This is a one-of-a-kind paint scheme that is not to be missed!

Union Pacific #913150 MoW Paint Scheme:

In November of 1980, Union Pacific repainted F-50-15 #913150 into the Kenefick Green Maintenance-of-Way scheme. The lettering styles on the prototype are eclectic, and they are recreated with extraordinary accuracy on our model—including the skull and bones stencil near the capacity data. This is a one-of-a-kind paint scheme that is not to be missed!

Union Pacific #913243 MoW Paint Scheme:

Union Pacific #913243 was repainted in Kenefick Green with notable differences to both the right and left hand sides of the car. ExactRail has captured these differences by creating unique left and right side artwork so that your model is a true replica of car #913243.

  • Bethlehem 4000 Hopper
The Bethlehem 4000 Hopper is one of the key cars to comprise the cool, mixed-paint-scheme, Western coal trains of the contemporary era!

The Bethlehem 4000 Hopper is the result of a rebuilding program in which Bethlehem 3737 and 3716 hoppers were reconfigured with 8” top chord extensions. Approximately 275 cubic feet of loading capacity were added to the prototype. Chicago and North Western Bethlehem 3737 hoppers were made to have 4011 cubic capacity, and Missouri Pacific Bethlehem 3737 and 3716 Hoppers were made to have 4000 cubic capacity. By way of this program, the physical dimensions of the car are a closer match to the physical dimensions of the taller, Pullman-Standard, Greenville and Bethlehem-Albina built cars. Physical similarities between these cars are optimal for flood loading operations.

In addition to the raised top-chord, the grab iron locations on the sides and ends of the car were moved, and the side sheets still bear the mounting holes of the previous locations. Small as it is, this detail is accurately captured on our model!

Thrall 54' "Protector" Coil Car

Norfolk Southern "As Delivered" CS15 Paint Scheme

Thrall 54'

The Thrall 54' "Protector" Coil Car is a Signature Prototype Like Few Others

The Thrall 54’ “Protector” Coil Car is a signature prototype like few others! Of the prototype, only 60 Protector coil cars were built. ExactRail breaks a new barrier by offering, what we believe is, the most signature freight car ever produced by RTR manufacturer!”

Norfolk Southern received ‘Protector’ coil cars from Thrall in 1992. These cars shared the well-style body of the Conrail 54' Coil Shield; however, they were equipped with an insulated, aluminum hood of avant-garde styling. Received under the car class CS15, NS utilized the 168800-168059 number series. The 'Protector' name stands for 'PROtected TEmperature Coil Transport On Rail'. These coil cars are one of the most recognizable—and quite frankly, one of the coolest freight cars of the contemporary era.

ExactRail has meticulously recreated the Thrall 54’ “Protector” Coil Car in HO Scale. With great attention, we have accurately captured the details of the prototype. From the complex, exposed brake appliances of the B-end platform to the intricate multi-piece framework of the coil hood, this car will impress.

Thrall 54' Conrail "Coil Shield" Coil Car

"As Delivered" G52S paint scheme!

Thrall 54' Conrail

Save 10% When You Buy 6 or More!
The Thrall 54’ “Coil Shield” Coil Car is a Signature Prototype Like Few Others

In 1992, Conrail purchased a unique “well” style coil gondola, and they assigned it the car class G52S. Through 1995, Conrail sought additional orders and ascribed G52T, G52U and G52V car classes. In total, Conrail purchased nearly 750 “coil shields.”

These coil cars are one of the most recognizable—and quite frankly, one of the coolest freight cars of the contemporary era.

ExactRail has meticulously recreated the Thrall 54’ “Coil Shield” Coil Car in HO Scale. With great attention, we have accurately captured the details of the prototype. From the complex, exposed brake appliances of the B-end platform, etched metal walks with appropriate tread pattern, and the intricate multi-piece framework of the coil hood, this car will impress.

Watch for the Norfolk Southern PROTECTOR version of the Thrall 54’ Coil Car in a future release from ExactRail!

Contemporary Presence

The Bethlehem 3483 Hopper is held by many to be the quintessential Western coal hopper of the modern era

In volume 4 number 3 of the Prospector, The Rio Grande Historical Society published “if one had to pick THE [sic] signature freight car of the Rio Grande in its final quarter century, it would undoubtedly be the 100 ton quad hopper from Bethlehem Steel Car.”

Hill railroads also purchased the Bethlehem 3483 in quantity. The Great Northern received 100 cars in an attractive, utilitarian paint scheme with the Great Northern moniker. The Burlington railroad placed six separate orders for a total of 1,370 cars. These cars were delivered in both the “Monogram” and “Helvetica” paint schemes. Today, original paint schemes of GN and Burlington 3483 Hoppers have been identified in BNSF Maintenance of Way service. However, when the Hill lines merged in 1970, many cars were repainted in the image of the new corporate identity, Burlington Northern.

These cars went everywhere!

ExactRail has tooled an exceptionally accurate model of the Bethlehem 3483 hopper! And with this release, we are proud to introduce an all-new HO scale draft box. This draft box better approaches scale dimensions, has accurate striker contours and appropriate key detail. And, ExactRail’s Bethlehem 3483 Hopper is factory delivered with Kadee couplers.

Johnstown America AutoFlood II Hoppers

ExactRail is pleased to introduce the re-tooled Johnstown America AutoFlood II Hopper!

As 100-ton hoppers approached retirement in the 1970 and 1980's, railroads begged car builders to lighten cars so to improve tare weight and fuel economy. Johnston America answered this call by producing the aluminum AutoFlood II coal hopper. Johnstown America provided an aerodynamic design with a lower center of gravity and the all-new MegoFlo™ automatic discharge system. The result is a car that is a sleek, smooth-sided hopper with extreme, contemporary presence.

ExactRail has tooled new coal loads for the Johnstown America AutoFlood II Hopper! Our intention was to create the most accurate flood-type coal loads for a modern hopper. The all-new AutoFlood II Coal Load has accurate loaf contours and a prototypic offset. The effect of the new load is visual appeal that transcends the load itself. These cars look fantastic, and these loads are included with each AutoFlood model!

In addition to the new coal load, ExactRail has re-tooled the end cages of the AutoFlood II for a more accurate, better rendition of the AutoFlood II. These improvements consist of the addition of a vertical support on A-end and the U-channel reinforcement on the underside of the slope sheet.

With these improvements, this release of ExactRail's AutoFlood II Hopper is the best ever!

The Pullman name is iconic. Arguably the greatest of rollingstock manufacturers, recognition of the ‘Pullman’ name transcends the railcar industry and the borders where these railcars traveled. The P-S 5344 box car is the last successful box car project from the Pullman-Standard company. With production beginning in 1977, Pullman-Standard produced nearly 7,000 P-S 5344 Box Cars. In 1981, Pullman moved to sell al railroad assets in an economy of declining freight car sales. However, these cars ply the rails in legacy of America’s great car builder.

B&O Wagontop Box Cars

The Baltimore and Ohio M-53 Wagontop Box Car is a true signature classic! In an era when the major design elements of the 40' box car seem to have been well standardized, the Baltimore and Ohio employed an innovative design in which the roof and sides were constructed from single panels of cooper-bearing steel. The quality of this steel and the seamless roof design protected lading from roof leaks and made these cars battleships on the rails. Some of these cars remained on the rails up to the early eighties.

Along with all-new road numbers of four popular paint schemes, ExactRail is proud to introduce the B&O M-53 Wagon Top Box Car in the all-new Post War, Linking Great States paint scheme!

ExactRail's M-53 Wagontop Box Car has been designed, engineered and tooled in the U.S. Our unique approach to precision micro-tooling distinguishes the M-53 in the numerous fine scale details. Additionally, ExactRail's M-53 Wagontop Box Car is offered with extraordinarily accurate paint and lettering schemes. In the development of this project, we enlisted the insight of the foremost experts and historians on Baltimore and Ohio's equipment. Their input represents years of meticulous research, the results of which are yours to enjoy!

The Magor Car Corporation was a New Jersey-based car builder, who from the early 1900s, concentrated on the manufacture of freight cars for international export. However, in 1963, the company was encouraged to give new consideration to the domestic market, based in part upon the success of Magor's aluminum designed freight cars. Previously, Magor had cooperated with Reynolds Materials and the Southern Railway to mass produce the first aluminum freight car for the U.S. market. In 1966, Magor introduced the 4750 cubic capacity aluminum covered hopper. Marketed as a car whose light tare meant more payload capacity, the Magor 4750 Covered Hopper which proved to be one of its most successful aluminum-based designs.

ExactRail's Magor 4750 Covered Hopper features only exceptionally accurate, well-researched paint schemes. To the extent that when the #501 of the Cargill/CLSX was repainted with non-standard script on both sides of the car, we recreated unique artwork for all four sides of the model to accurately capture these nuanced differences. This is an ExactRail first!

About the 4427 Covered Hopper

Beginning in the 1960’s, covered hoppers replaced 40' boxcars for grain service. The Pullman Standard 4427 cubic foot low-side covered hopper is one of the legendary cars that helped make this transition successful. Graced with many colorful paint schemes and plying the rails through all corners of North America, these cars carried numerous dry commodities including grain, corn, wheat, flour and many other forms of dry bulks.

The Gunderson 6269

Growth in intermodal markets had the effect of stearing railroads away from box cars in the modern era. However, it became clear that there was a market for the development of new box cars in paper products, as shippers require high-grade box cars. This stands against the trend of declining box car development of the time. Modern builders, such as Gunderson, Trinity and Trenton-Works, set themselves to the task of developing competitive box cars. These cars have a distinctively modern asthetic; they are known as 'Paper Boxes.'

ExactRail is proud to offer the Portand-built version of the Gunderson 6269 High Cube Box Car in N-scale! With accurate details such as the Stanray 'Redi-Roof', 12' door, and only highly authentic lettering styles and colors, the Gunderson 6269 High Cube Box Car is model long absent from the N-scale market. As with all new ExactRail models, it features ExactRail's own narrow-style, body mounted draft box and the assurance that it has been designed, engineered and tooled in our own Orem, Utah facilities.

Trinity 64' TRINCool Phase I Reefer

Gunderson 6269 Hy-Cube Box Car

The Reefer

With bold symmetry and modern aesthetics, few pieces of rollingstock communicate 'contemporary' as strongly as the Trinity TRINCool 64' reefer!

The modern reefer is a contemporary vindication for the perishable trade of yore when railroads moved carloads of perishable traffic by the thousands. Speaking to this heritage, the ARMN reporting marks have reference to American Refrigerator Transit, a refrigerator car line formed in 1881 via a joint venture between the Missouri Pacific and Wabash Railroads. Now in the care of the Union Pacific, AMRN reefers are often seen in hot schedule Q trains, which is the UP's designation for premium manifest traffic.

ExactRail is proud to offer the third release of our Trinity 64' TRINCool Reefers! Replete with detail, ExactRail's modern reefer includes separately applied release valve rods, the safety chain on the A-end platform, reporting marks on the truck sides frames, etched metal filler caps, fuel tank gauge with pad printed read-out, separately applied and painted temperature box, and precision micro-tooled huck bolts. It also features colors and lettering styles which are the most accurately rendered.

Innovate with the leader in precision micro tooling, purchase the ExactRail Trinity TRINCool 64' reefer today.

  • The most accurate wheel sets

Introducing the World’s finest wheel sets. Precision crafted with Swiss turning equipment, ExactRail’s wheel sets feature the most accurate contours and a prototypic dish and tire. And, we are proud that they are manufactured and assembled in our own Orem, Utah facilities.

To faithfully capture the complex surfaces of a prototype wheel, every aspect of the wheel and axle is precision turned. Of these surfaces, it is noteworthy that the interior wheel face sweeps beyond the margin of the flange. This is one of the most distinctive features of a prototype wheel—which is that the flange is offset from the plane where the wheel meets the axle. Furthermore, the axles themselves are precision milled so to capture the distinctive concave dish of the prototype.

Additionally, every wheel set is manufactured from real brass or nickel-silver.

We have held nothing back. ExactRail’s all-new brass and nickel-silver wheel sets are only available from ExactRail.com!

Waffles, a Bite-Sized Overiew

In 1974, the Southern Railway took delivery of 70 ton, 5277 cubic foot capacity box cars from Pullman-Standard. Different from the majority of other cars of the IPD era, the Southern cars had a full set of "waffles"—stamped impressions into the car's side panels which were intended to accommodate lading equipment. Beginning with P-S lot 9725, Southern Railway would eventually roster nearly 5,000 of these box cars. Found anywhere, the Southern P-S 50' 'Waffle' Box Car is the epitome of a signature classic!

ExactRail recreates the P-S 50' 'Waffle' Box Car with our team who designs, engineers and tools in the United States! Available only in accurate paint schemes with exceptionally accurate lettering and logotypes, ExactRail's N-scale P-S 50' 'Waffle' is a highly authentic replica with a host of exclusive features. As with all new models, the P-S 50' 'Waffle' Box Car is available only from www.exactrail.com.

About the Center-Beam

Through the input and participation of the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern railroads, Thrall developed a new style of bulkhead flat car called the "Center-Beam." The intention of the design was to prevent hapless fork-lift drivers from dumping lading while loading and unloading the car. Introduced in 1977, the innovation has proved successful, and it became colloquially known as the "Opera Window" due to the large cut-outs along the center parition. The Thrall 63' "Opera Window" Center-Beam are still common to the rails, and they are as one of the most distinctive prototypes of all time.

ExactRail's Thrall 63' "Opera Window" Center-Beam Flat Car is an extraordinary replica. Easily one of our most intricate and part-intense models to date, the "Opera Window" Center-Beam is a hybrid model of etched brass and plastic that is without equal. The model consists of 125 separate parts, which includes, a 0.010" etched brass center partition, individually tooled ratchets and separate deck panels so that there are no ejection marks on the body from the injection molding process. The model also features wire coupler cut hangers, which match the "loop" style coupler cut lever hangers on the prototype.

The Thrall 63' "Opera Window" Center-Beam Flat Car is available now for pre-order only through www.exactrail.com! These fine models will ship in late 2012. Pre-Orders will close on August 10th.

Deck Plate Girder Bridge

New in HO-Scale – Available directly from ExactRail!

72' Deck Plate Girder Bridge
Prices starting at $33.95$24.95
Overview

ExactRail is proud to augment our family of 30', 50' and 72' Deck Plate Girder Bridge with new and re-releases of our most popular 72' bridges. With exceptional attention to detail, the ExactRail Deck Plate Girder Bridges are the only ready to run plate girder bridges dimensioned for mainline service!

Plate Girder bridges are the most common type of railroad bridge in North America, and the E-72 load rating has been a common mainline standard from the 1940's. Yet, there haven't been any E-72 deck-type plate girder bridges available as ready-to-run models! ExactRail is pleased to fill this void with our all-new deck plate girder bridges.

About the prototype: The practice of North American railroads for determining the load capacity of steel bridges is through Cooper's E Loadings system. When developed, the index was based on the axle loading of locomotives. The prefix 'E' in the rating system indicates what weight a structure may support per locomotive axle. For example, an E-72 rated bridge is one which may support a locomotive of 72,000 lbs. per axle. The index was a function of locomotive axle weight because, at the time Theodore Cooper devised the formulae, the locomotive was the heaviest part of a train. From the 1920's until the present, the E-72 load rating has developed into the common mainline standard.

About the model: ExactRail's plate deck girder bridges have been carefully dimensioned from actual prototypes so that we may offer the most accurate deck plate girder bridges. So to accommodate a seamless transition between the bridge track and adjacent mainline, we've opted for a section of bridge ties to which the modeler affixes rail. We recommend cutting a section of ties from flex-track and gluing the rail to the bridge ties with Barge cement. Barge cement is available from hardware and home improvement stores and may also be found online.

ExactRail offers the deck plate girder bridge in "Early" and "Late" versions for RTR models and in three versions of undecorated kits.

History of the Berwick 7327 Box Car

Following World War II, the market of American-made automobiles surged inexorably. It gave a new facet to a concept now deemed as "classic" Americana: Ford Mustangs, drive-in movies and fast food. In ways less evident to the road-rallying public, railroads participated in this surge. They were the transportation networks between plants that produced automobile parts to the respective assembly facilities.

In the 1970s, the automobile industry was in decline, and railcar builder’s offered a new generation of Plate F, auto-parts boxcars. These cars had large capacities for lighter density loads, and because these cars frequently operated in pool service, the paint schemes of contributing railroads were seen in locations where they may have otherwise been unfamiliar.

Not unlike the classic cars of the automobile boom, these high priority auto parts trains seem to be a foregone memento of another era. Recreate that era with ExactRail’s all-new Berwick 7327 Box Car!

Available in six paint schemes and an undecorated kit, this beautiful replica is available only directly from ExactRail!

History of the Evans USRE 5277 Box Car

Through the IPD Box Car boom of the 1970's, Evans Products Company modernized their box car portfolio. With the Evans-USRE 5277 Plate C Box Car, they seemed to settle on a design formula which would characterize the company standard for modern box cars. These features included box-corrugated, non-terminating ends, Stanray X-panel overhanging roof, and riveted car sides near the end posts.

ExactRail recreates one of the common box cars of the IPD era with our team who designs, engineers and tools in the United States!
