Experience exemplified...As a young boy, Chris Clune marveled at the craftsmanship of his father's model railroad – the Cascade County Narrow Gauge as modeled in ON3 scale. Apparently talent ran deep and early in the Clune family – because by age 9, Chris had completely immersed himself in the world of scratch-building model trains.By age 12, he was competing against adults in various NMRA contests, earning a host of 1st place wins – including his famous GP40P-2 scratchbuilt entirely from brass. Chris started his first company at age 15, called Cascade Models, with a scratch-built chip car. To produce the kits for this car, he made resin and white metal castings from rubber molds. By age 19, Chris had grown frustrated with the lack of accuracy and detail found on mass-marketed plastic trains. This frustration fueled his personal drive to address the problem by raising the bar and setting new standards in production design, accuracy and tooling quality. In 1996, Chris formed Cascade Micro-Tooling (CMT) and began building a prestigious reputation by engineering and tooling more than 20 new products for the renowned diesel detail part manufacturer Cannon & Company. Gordon Cannon, founder of Cannon & Company, was both an idol and mentor to Chris who helped him fine-tune his tooling talents in those early years. For more than 12 years, Chris positioned CMT as the premier product design and tooling firm for quality model train products. The client list was impressive, including such notable names as: Athearn, Branchline Trains, InterMountain, Tangent Scale Models and Canon & Company to name just a few. During this time CMT delivered some the industry's most acclaimed products including; heavyweight passenger cars, dozens of ground-breaking freight cars and numerous diesel locomotives such as the; SD45T-2, MP15-AC, SD-50, SD-60, and SD-70 series of locomotives - among many others. It's from this heritage of quality and integrity that ExactRail emerges. The exacting standards established by Chris over the years are apparent in the meticulous attention to the accuracy and detail of each product ExactRail produces. ExactRail truly is "The Next Generation of Model Railroading". Relocation to UtahMoving operations from Eugene, Oregon to Orem, Utah has been challenging. Opening our Utah operations required relocating an entire tooling shop, a CEO who has called Oregon home his whole life and the ExactRail development team. Why the change? ExactRail has two founding partners, Chris Clune and John Pestana. As you read above, Chris is a model railroading veteran with exceptional talent in designing, tooling and manufacturing world-class products. He’s also well versed in business management. John knows trains but his principle contributions are technology and business building. Prior to ExactRail, John co-founded a software company called Omniture, which is currently a publicly traded company with over 1100 employees. John also has several other business ventures headquartered in Utah, which required he stay close to home. We’re excited to be in Utah and have designed our facility to help us meet your product and customer service needs in the model railroading community. ![]() John Pestana & Chris Clune |
